A Different Way to Support Animals
Why We Don't Offer Animal Rides
Animals are an important part of our lives, and their welfare is something we care deeply about. For that reason, InLuxor does not offer, promote or arrange horse riding, camel riding or horse-drawn carriage rides.
Horses, donkeys and camels are still widely used in tourism throughout Egypt. While there are certainly owners who care well for their animals, welfare standards vary considerably.
Working animals need much more than food and shelter. They need suitable nutrition, constant access to clean water, adequate rest, freedom of movement, appropriate equipment, veterinary and hoof care, social contact and protection from excessive heat and workloads.
Unfortunately, animals used for tourist rides do not always receive this level of care. Poor body condition, unsuitable tack or harnesses, long working hours and limited opportunities for natural movement can all affect their welfare.
For us, there is also a more fundamental consideration: we believe animals should never be used for human entertainment.
So rather than offering animal rides, we encourage our guests to experience Luxor in other ways and, if they would like animals to be part of their visit, to consider supporting one of the local organisations working to improve their lives.
What You Can Do Instead
Visit or Support an Animal Welfare Organisation
Luxor is home to several organisations providing veterinary treatment, education and practical support for animals and the people who depend on them.
Visiting one of these organisations, learning about their work or making a donation is a meaningful alternative to spending money on an animal ride.

Brooke works to improve the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules through veterinary care, education and support for animal owners and local communities.
In Luxor, their teams currently provide mobile veterinary care for working equines.

Animal Care in Egypt
Animal Care in Egypt is a charity hospital in Luxor providing free veterinary treatment and education. Its hospital treats working horses and donkeys as well as dogs, cats and other animals, and includes facilities where equines can stay while recovering. ACE also welcomes visitors to its centre in Luxor.

Animal Welfare of Luxor
AWOL is a smaller charity working particularly with animals in villages on Luxor's West Bank. It provides free veterinary treatment for horses, donkeys, dogs, cats and camels and also supports owners with equipment and education aimed at preventing animal suffering.

You do not need to take part in an animal activity to appreciate the important role animals play in everyday life in Egypt.

For us, that is a much more meaningful way to include animals in your visit to Luxor.
